Here's a totally unauthorized reprint of
Peter De Vries's story
"The Irony Of It All", a satire of pulp writing, and
Randall Garrett's "Look Out! Duck!", a science-fiction satire of De Vries's story, now with 50% more jokes as a result of being able to read the De Vries story first.
Eventually I'll gussy this up with mutual hyperlinks connecting the two Dumbrowskis and the two Constanzas, but not today.
Thank you, John. I needed that.
ReplyDeleteThanks indeed! Got my fix of sci-fi and it was funny, too! 8-)
ReplyDeleteIn Frank Herbert's SF novel Dune Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's Mentat is called “Piter De Vries”. I wonder where the author took that name from.
ReplyDeleteIt's usually straightforward to figure out the etymology of Herbert's names and special terms. What's hard is to figure out what, if anything, is the significance of those etymologies. Herbert could just have decided to use the name because he thought it sounded appropriate.
